Chemistry 1 Unit 3: Atoms and the Periodic Table

In this unit, you will learn about the atom and the Periodic Table of Elements. Much of this unit will be spent connecting what we know about the atom (it's subatomic particles, electron configuration, valence electrons, reactivity) with its position on the PToE (group, period, and region).

10/1 - History of the Atom - Who is Atom?
Notebook: Pages 73-75
Read through the information below and take notes on page 74 of your notebook. (See Ms. Siverling for more information about what happens on page 73.)

10/2 - Subatomic Particles
Notebook: pages 76-78
Read pages 127-128 from A Natural Approach to Chemistry (attached below) for notebook page 76. Then do the online lab on page 77.

10/3 - Electron Configuration
Notebook: pages 79-81
Get the notes (pages 79-80) from the powerpoint below. Then practice at the bottom of page 80 and all of page 81.

10/4 - Valence Electrons and Lewis Dot Diagrams
Notebook: pages 82-84
Get the notes (pages 82-83) from the powerpoint below. Then practice at the bottom of page 83 and all of page 84.

10/5 - Unit 3 (Part 1) Quiz
Notebook: will go on page 85 after it's graded.
See Ms. Siverling to make up this quiz.

10/5 - Patterns and Regions in the Periodic Table
Notebook: pages 86-87
Get the notes (page 86) from the powerpoint below. Then, read page 168 of A Natural Approach to Chemistry to complete the table at the top of page 87. Finally, complete the Group Practice on the bottom of page 87.

10/9 - Groups of the Periodic Table
Notebook: pages 88-89
Color code the Periodic Table on the top of notebook page 88 using the Periodic Table on page 175 of A Natural Approach to Chemistry. (Don't forget to color code the key underneath the Periodic Table also!!!)
Then, use the textbook pages listed to complete the table at the bottom of page 88. The first example, Alkali Metals, is done for you in the powerpoint below. Complete the practice on page 89.

10/10 - Trends in the Periodic Table
Notebook: pages 90-93
Get the notes (pages 90-92) from the powerpoint below. Then practice on page 93.

10/15 - The Mole
Notebook: pages 94-96
Get the notes (pages 94-95) from the powerpoint point. Then practice on the bottom of page 95 and all of page 96.

10/16 - Unit 3 (Part 2) Quiz
Notebook: will go on page 97 after it's graded.
See Ms. Siverling to make up this quiz.

10/17 - Unit 3 Study Guide
Notebook: page 98

10/18 - Unit 3 Exam
See Ms. Siverling to take this exam.

10/19 - Unit 3 Exam Reflection
